Lewis Hamilton believes Mercedes could spoil Ferrari’s party at their home Italian GP this weekend, insisting the 2 teams are about a”similar level” in Monza regardless of the Scuderia’s power benefit.
Ferrari, debuting an upgraded engine in F1’s quickest track and searching for back-to-back 2019 successes, were billed as powerful favorites for the weekend by Mercedes although Charles Leclerc topped equally Friday sessions, Hamilton was only 0.068therefore slower in Practice Two – that enabled more dry running than P1 to a rain-affected day.

A tow assisted hamilton by team-mate Valtteri Bottas because of his fastest lap, but it was set in rain that was mild compared to Leclerc’s to a track.
Although conditions supposed there is from Friday a pecking order unclear, Hamilton at least believes Mercedes are to Ferrari than they had been in Spa – before just holding him off in the race when he is beaten by Leclerc to stick.
“They’re fairly rapid in a straight line, we’re quite strong I presume on race pace,” explained Hamilton. “But maybe a small bit nearer potentially on single lap pace. It appears like we can have a struggle.
“I was expecting them to be fast on a right, which they are, however, there is enough corners where we’re in a position to get back it. They’re not really that quick through the corners, which it kind of balances out us.
“I think it’s going to become a very hard race but we are on a comparable level which is quite wonderful.”
Bottas, that was in P2, added:”We knew coming they were going to be powerful but it did not seem worse compared to Spa to us.
“For sure we have a fantastic chance this weekend”
Leclerc has also seen sufficient evidence that was early to think that Ferrari have a fight on their hands at the front of the area.
“Fine to be fastest, however I do not think that it’s a real picture of what,” said the Ferrari driver.
“I anticipate Mercedes to be very strong tomorrow when we’ll be in precisely the same conditions, as they did their fastest lap time in tough problems.”
Sebastian Vettel, two tenths away Leclerc’s pace, added:”It was OK but we can still get more from the automobile. It ended up being a bit of a scrappy session with everybody jumping out due to not the usual rhythm and the conditions you’ve got, as soon as the light went .
“The main issue is we have some good laps, we understand where the weakness is, and that’s what we try to focus on.”
Even though Friday’s two sessions had been interrupted by rain and red flags, a tendency observed was teams. One car was running around just ahead of another, together with the next automobile gaining a performance advantage down the straights.
“If you are inside three or three seconds of the car in the front, it’s probably going to be worthwhile 3-4kph,” states Sky F1’s Paul Di Resta. “That on each straight is free lap time”
Karun Chandhok included:”The gap Lewis needed behind Valtteri in P2 was fantastic. Lewis gained 6kph on each right.”
Asked about the potency of a tow, Vettel explained:”We can see the terms, we will see the tyres, how careful we all need to be about the out lap and proceed from there.
“It is nice if you receive the tow, so it is not so pleasant if you don’t, but that is how it is around here.”
Ferrari are searching for a first Italy win since 2010 while Mercedes have won the past five events, which makes quite the tendency of upsetting the house’Tifosi’.
Hamilton also praised the”amazing” and”particular” Monza circuit and Italian GP, that will be celebrating its 90th occasion this weekend.
“It’s an extraordinary trail,” he stated. “it is a really unique circuit, the braking points are amazingly important, it is very tough and then you’ve got Parabolica and you throw so much pace into these corners and you’ve not got a great deal of downforce.
“It’s a real special track to drive.”
